Aloe Vera (long recognized for its soothing properties) is the most popular cosmetic and toiletry ingredient in the United States according to the Cosmetic, Fragrance, and Toiletry Association (CTFA). Aloe vera is even used in tissues containing Aloe to soothe the dry irritated nose.

Aloe Vera contains up to 96% water and many moisture retentive polysaccharides. Scientists have isolated glucose, mannose, arabinose, galactose and xylose polysaccharides from Aloe Vera constituents. Polysaccharides are known to act as moisturizers, hydrating the skin. "Aloe also makes the surface of the skin smoother because of its cohesive effect on the superficial flaking epidermal cells by sticking them together." In the United States Aloe Vera is grown commercially in California, Florida, Texas and in specially-designed greenhouses in Oklahoma.
